What It Is…

This is my tech blog.  Subject matter ranges from general observations about UNIX, Apple, Microsoft, and the internet, to specific info about Cocoa, Perl, Objective-C, OS X, UNIX, to reviews of software and hardware, and anything else of a technical nature that I learn which might be of interest to someone. You can check out my resume here, which is kind of a technical autobiography, but it doesn’t go all the way back, because I didn’t want to date myself.  Suffice it to say that when I started programming, there was no such thing as a computer science major in college, there were no CRT screens, coding was done with pencil and paper forms, turnaround to test your program was usually 24 hours, and your only debugging tools were a hexadecimal core dump and an assembly language listing.Since those days, I have written programs in IBM 360 BAL, COBOL, RPG, PL-1, BASIC, FORTH, C, C++, Objective-C, Perl, and PHP.  These programs ran on IBM and Honeywell mainframes, Ohio Scientific microcomputers, Apples, IBM PCs, Macs, Commodore 64s, Atari STs, Amigas, and Sun, HP, and SGI UNIX workstations.
The applications I have developed include, highway maintenance, mutual fund company accounting, a meta-assember, general accounting, content management, a database on the Commodore 64, desktop publishing software, spreadsheet, web newspaper publishing, email archiving, and many others that I don’t remember anymore. My knowledge is broad and somewhat deep in spots, but I am not an OS kernel geek, or a bottomless expert on any of these languages, hardware platforms, or application genres.  But I have a lot of experience with software in general, both as a developer and a user, and, to a large extent, I have lived the history of computing.  My current main interests are web development and Mac OS X application development.
